Disruption across Somerset continues this afternoon, as the county now starts to deal with the aftermath of Storm Ciarán, which hit much of the South West earlier this week.

Drivers are urged to take extra time for their journeys, with Travel Somerset warning a number of roads have been closed because of heavy flooding.

Today, A303 and the A37 in Ilchester have been shut off, whilst emergency road closure gates were also closed on the Levels because the roads are too dangerous to pass.

Floods minister - and Taunton MP - Rebecca Pow has also spoken out today, saying potential flooding risks remain across the UK with river levels still high, there being large waves at the coast and because of the ground being too saturated.

This afternoon, National Highways has confirmed drivers on the A303 need to avoid part of the route, with a stretch of carriageway closed because of the floodwater.

The westbound carriageway is shut closed between the A37 (Illchester) and A3088 (Yeovil) and they say that this is expected to be the case 'for some time'.

National Highways Duty Operations Manager for the South West, Beverley Mears, said: “We have had heavy rain falling on already saturated ground which has seen the nearby waterway burst its banks, flooding nearby fields and washing onto our road. More rain is predicted today and over the weekend which will exasperate the situation.

“We are looking into any possible solutions to alleviate the problem but in the meantime we would urge drivers to avoid the area if possible and, if not, to allow extra time for their journeys.

“Surrounding roads are also experiencing flooding which has impacted our official diversion route for this area. We would therefore advise drivers diverted off the A303 to head towards Shepton Mallet and pick up the main roads there.”
