Yeovil captain Josh Staunton is to leave the club - who currently sit top of the National League South table.

The 28-year-old was widely praised by fans for the way he responded - including apologising - after last season's relegation.

In a statement the club have wished him well and reflected how he 'even spent one game as interim manager leading the Glovers to a 1-0 win against Altrincham on the final day of the 21/22 season, becoming the youngest manager in the National League to record a win'

It says: "Yeovil Town Football Club and Josh Staunton have reached an agreement to mutually terminate Josh’s contract.

"Josh’s support of the club through good times and bad has been invaluable, and he leaves with the best wishes of everyone at the club. Josh has expressed his continued support for the club going forward and wishes them the best of luck as they pursue promotion during the 2023/24 season and beyond.

"With game time becoming limited for Josh this season, it has been agreed that the club and Josh Staunton mutually agreed to part ways.

"We would like to thank Josh for his services and wish him all the best for the future."

In response, one fan posted online: "A great ambassador for the club who always went the extra mile …will be missed."

Another added: "Sad news. All the very best to you in the future. That interview after Wrexham will always stick in my head. A gentleman and a real loss to #ytfc"
