A heart-transplantee from Salisbury has returned from the World Transplant Games (WTG) with a silver medal.

Lucy Ryan represented Team GB at the games and won her medal in the 3km racewalk, while also competing in the 100m sprint and the ball throw event.

The games were held in April in Perth, Australia.

“It was an honour to compete for my country and hopefully raise some awareness of the benefits of transplantation and organ and tissue donation, along with the need for more donors,” Lucy said, adding: “Hopefully, it has encouraged some people to have that vital discussion with their loved ones regarding their donation wishes.

“I literally couldn't have attended the games and had this amazing, intense experience without everyone's support back home!”

Whilst at the WTG, Lucy celebrated the 30th anniversary of her heart transplant.

“It was quite surreal to think that thanks to my donor and their family, and the wonderful medical care and my family that I am not only still alive three decades on but competing for my country,” she said.
