Firefighters will continue work at Wiltshire recycling centre "for several days" to extnguish the blaze.

Crews were called to a blaze at Grist Environmental at Stert near Devizes at 11.10pm on Wednesday (17th November) where they found 300 tones of waste alight.

Although now under control crews and staff there need to sift though all the rubbish and drench it with water to ensure it doesn't reignite.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) has apologised to local residents for the "intense" smoke plumes, as staff continue their work.

It has also confirmed temporary traffic lights will be installed on the A342, from Friday (19th November) until the blaze is extinugished.

This is because a high volume pump will be based near the site, to provide a better water supply. While the pump is in use, hose lines will need to cross the carriageway.

'Keep doors and windows closed'

DWFRS Group Manager Richard Coleman said:

“Once we start getting a more constant water supply onto the fire, the smoke plume will intensify, and we apologise to local residents who may be concerned by this.

"However, this approach is intended to bring the fire to a close more quickly, which will be to the benefit of everyone. If anyone is concerned about the smoke, they are advised to keep doors and windows closed.

Meanwhile Wiltshire Council have installed air monitoring equipment in the area, and all of the contaminated water is contained within the site’s bunded area, which is being cleared regularly to protect the watercourse.

It's believed the fire, which is now being investigated, was started accidentally.
