A charity is offering help to prospective university students from low income families, to ease the financial strain of studying.

Through its University Bursary programme Wiltshire and Swindon Community Foundation provides essential financial support to young people pursuing higher education.

Nicola Hillier, Grants Manager at the foundation, highlighted the ongoing need due to rising living costs that outpace government student finance.

In Wiltshire and Swindon, only 40% of young people pursue higher education, with cost as a major barrier, Nicola explained. The foundation offers bursaries of £1,900 for each year of study, supporting over 200 students presently enrolled in universities.

Addressing financial barriers

Students often face significant financial challenges, with national surveys indicating maintenance loans fall short of living expenses by approximately £500 a month.

This shortfall can lead to students skipping meals, using food banks, or considering dropping out from university. The foundation's bursary aims to bridge this gap, helping students manage essential expenses like food, fuel, books, and travel.

“The bursary alleviates financial pressure so students can focus on their studies, working fewer hours and worrying less about money,” Nicola said.

Eligibility and application process

The program is open to students aged 17 to 24 living in Wiltshire and Swindon, from low-income households, including those receiving means-tested benefits or under local authority care.

Nicola emphasized that applicants do not need perfect grades or attend top universities; the program focuses on those who need financial assistance to study.

Applications are open until 10th April, with a straightforward online form available on the foundation’s website. “Even if you’re unsure about eligibility, check the grant criteria online or contact us,” she advised.
