A warning has been issued to Wiltshire residents over a possible scam calls surrounding the council tax rebate from the government.

A number of councils across the country have had reports from residents who have received telephone calls from scammers requesting bank account details in order to pay them the £150 council tax energy rebate.

Wiltshire Council has started to pay out the rebate to households that pay their council tax by direct debit. Households that do not pay by direct debit will receive a letter in May explaining how to claim their rebate.

The local authority will NOT call you to request your bank details.

Do not give your bank details to any callers claiming to be from Wiltshire Council as this will be a scam.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU'VE FALLEN VICTIM

Wiltshire Trading Standards have issued some advice in case anyone thinks they have fallen victim to a scam.

If you're concerned, this is what you should do:

  • If you've already responded to a scam, end all further communication immediately.
  • Call your bank directly and cancel any recurring payments – for speed and ease, most can call a new 159 hotline.
  • Report the scam to the police through Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or report a scam anonymously on the Action Fraud website.
  • If you wish to seek further help, contact Citizens Advice Scams Action via the Citizens Advice website, or call its Scams Action helpline on 0808 250 5050.
