Wiltshire charity supporting Northamptonshire flood victims

Chilmark's REACT has been called out to Billing Aquadrome

A Wiltshire charity's stepped in to support people in Northamptonshire affected by flooding from Storm Bert.

Chilmark based REACT has opened a rest centre at Billing Aquadrome for those who can't return to their homes.

The area's been evacuated for the fourth time this year.

Mike Nicholls is from REACT and says families there face an uncertain future:

"It's a very traumatic experience for the residents - some are elderly, some have medical conditions. It's their house and possessions that are gone and not for the first time, it's only eight weeks since the last time they were evacuated.

"We're here just to provide that comfort blanket, some assistance, someone to talk to.

"Christmas is coming, it's a question of whether they can get back into their homes by then or whether they face transit accommodation somewhere - that's what's playing on everybody's minds. It's a situation that nobody wants to face."

The charity say they were called out early yesterday morning (Monday 25th November) to travel to the scene.

They're helping 62 adults and 10 children there, and working with local agencies to make sure they're looked after in the long term too.

It's the second time in as many months that REACT's services have been needed in the area.

Salisbury MP calling for local solutions to flooding

The flooding in many parts of the country also comes as South Wiltshire MP John Glen spoke in Parliament about the need for local communities to take control for the defences they need to protect homes and businesses.

He asked the Environment Secretary for a meeting about the issue - raising Britford as an example of somewhere taking matters into their own hands:

Nine properties in the village were flooded earlier this year - prompting action to improve defences, with planning applications currently under Wiltshire Council consideration.
