Formal warnings about breaches of the Covid-19 rules were issued in more than 20 incidents across Wiltshire during New Year’s Eve.

We’re told that’s a ‘relatively low number throughout the night’, with the majority of calls reporting potential house parties.

Under Wiltshire’s current Tier 3 rules, households aren’t allowed to mix indoors or in private gardens, with the rule of six in place for outdoor public spaces.

Among the incidents police were called to was a licensed premises in Trowbridge, where a small group of people were attending a private party shortly after 10.00pm.

Those within the premises were spoken to by officers, and they’ll be ‘dealt with in due course’.

Superintendent Adrian Burt said:

"Although there were a small number of incidents where people were flouting the rules, overall we saw a very quiet and peaceful New Year's Eve.

"I would like to thank our communities for their cooperation. I know that many will have been disappointed not to have had their usual celebrations, but it is clear that we need to work together to try to bring the spread of Covid-19 under control.”
