Wiltshire Police has been honouring some of their staff for their 'bravery, skill and dedication' - in the first 'in-person' force awards since 2019.

The ceremony at Chalk Barn near Pewsey, saw a number of awards given out for long service, as well as Commendations from the Chief Constable.

Among them was recognition for Sergeant James Osment, who's based in Amesbury.

He received a Commendation for his 'brave actions' after a woman jumped into a river.

PS Osment, and a colleague, responded - wading into waist deep water to prevent the woman going further down the cold river.

The citation reads:

"It was dark and their selfless actions placed them in danger, whilst Storm Barra continued to swell the turbulent river.

"With assistance from an off-duty paramedic and a PCSO, the woman was pulled out of the water and to the safety of the riverbank."

Long service awards have also been given to officers including Detective Sergeant Martin Faulkner, who leads a team of CID officers at Salisbury, and former Amesbury Inspector Ricky Lee, who is currently working as a County Duty Inspector.

Wiltshire Police Chief Constable Kier Pritchard said at the ceremony:

“It is a huge privilege for me to join you and your families and loved ones and say thank you for the outstanding contributions you have made to policing our communities.

"Policing is about going the extra mile and about giving it your all to protect people, prevent crime, deliver justice for victims and to safeguard people who are vulnerable to risk.

"Many take up this vocation, knowing the risks and dangers, yet freely commit themselves to protect others. It is a truly unique profession and I have a great deal of respect for all who commit to their role in policing.

"Crime is becoming more complex, public expectations are rising, and the new pressures on society, means that as a Force we are more than ever in demand. This is a great example of those taking pride in their roles, going that extra mile and doing what is right.

"I am hugely proud of you all and everyone across our force. I have the utmost respect for you and for what you do. I want to congratulate everyone receiving an award.”
