Police warn drink/drug driving 'not worth the risk' during Festive season
Wiltshire Police are clamping down on people driving under the influence this month
People in Wiltshire are being warned by Police NOT to drive home after Christmas parties if they've been drinking or using drugs.
It comes as the Force is cracking down on driving under the influence with their annual winter drink and drug driving campaign.
PC Paul Brewster from the Roads Policing Unit said: "We want people to get home to their families safely."
He adds that it's 'not worth the risk' with severe penalties for those who are caught driving under the influence.
"When you use drink or drugs and drive, it affects your ability to act hazards on the road," PC Brewster said, adding: "Even the smallest amount of drink drugs can affect your ability to be able to react to hazards when you're drinking and driving or using drugs and driving.
"You're not just putting yourself at risk, but it's everybody else on the road as well."
PC Brewster continued: "This December we'll be out on patrol. And if you're caught driving under the influence, you're looking at serious penalties, including a driving ban, fines or even gaol time. Ultimately, drinking or drug driving isn't worth the risk if you're out and drinking at this time of year, arrange another way of getting home."
The Force recommend public transport or arranging a life, while designated drivers are told to stick to soft drinks.
"Ultimately, this is about making sure this time of year is safe for everybody," said PC Brewster.
