Wiltshire pet owners asked to be cautious with anti-freeze
The liquid can pose a fatal risk to cats and dogs
Pet owners in Salisbury should be cautious of their pets when it comes to car maintenance, according to VetsNow.
Snow and Ice warnings have been are in place this week, and road users who use anti-freeze pose an unintentional risk to animals.
Anti-freeze can escape from wash containers and car radiators and should be cleared quickly and thoroughly with water.
VetsNow Head of telehealth Dave Leicester said:
“It is important to minimise spillages as much as possible, even a small amount of anti-freeze in a puddle of water ca be enough to poison a cat.”
Most anti-freezes contain Ethylene glycol, but a safer alternative with Propylene glycol is available.
VetsNow have also outlined the three stages of anti-freeze poisoning.
Stage one is likely to be wobbliness, increased urination and pain in the back and kidney area.
Stage two a worsening of the stage one symptoms and stage three severe acute kidney failure, which can come in less than 48 hours.
