A share of £14 million of Government funding is to be given to Wiltshire Council to aid the recovery of nature in Wiltshire.

The money will be coming from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, allowing the council to work alongside local communities to deliver a strategy for nature recovery in their area.

The council will prepare a Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) for Swindon and Wiltshire.

Wiltshire Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, Cllr Nick Holder, said he is delighted to have the responsibility of shaping the “important work” over the coming years.

Cllr Holder added: “We will be seeking to collaborate with local partners to develop our strategy and look forward to working together on a common goal to protect and enhance the beautiful county we live in.”

The local geography will dictate the best solution for nature recovery, with LNRS helping map out the required action in each community.

Natural England Chair Tony Juniper said nature recovery should be locally led if we are to create rich habitats for wildlife to recover and thrive.

“Through these initiatives that support a growing national Nature Recovery Network, we can create natural landscapes which will capture carbon, mitigate extreme weather events and protect the health of people and wildlife,” he said.
