Wiltshire Police and forces across the country are remembering those who laid down their lives to protect their communities.

Events were held earlier this week - including at their HQ in Devizes - in what's hoped to become a regular thing in the policing calendar.

The service was led by Wiltshire Police's Chaplain Christine Hawkins and Deputy Chief Constable Paul Mills.

Chief Constable Catherine Roper said it's important to recognise National Police Memorial Day, held today (Sunday 29th September), on a more local level.

Chaplain Christine Hawkins said:

“The service was the first local commemoration for fallen officers we have had for a number of years, but we hope it will be a regular event in the Wiltshire Police calendar going forward. I aimed to make the service inclusive of people of all faiths as well as those who do not profess a faith.”

Chief Constable Catherine Roper said:

“Our service was held in the week that the National Police Memorial Service takes place. The Police Remembrance Trust arranges the service in one of the four countries of the United Kingdom each year, to commemorate all the officers who have died on duty across the 43 forces. This year, the service will take place on Sunday 29 September in Glasgow but it was important we took some time to recognise the occasion locally.”
