South West Wiltshire's MP says he's 'praying' that changes to the Winter Fuel Payment set out by the Government are 'annulled'.

Tisbury and Mere member Andrew Murrison has signed an Early Day Motion in Parliament against the plans.

It's the first time he's used the process in more than seven years.

He says he's taking action on this subject as he 'feels particularly strongly about the impact of the proposed cut to constituents'.

From this Winter, the payment scheme will only be for people on pension credit or other means-tested benefits.

It was previously given to almost everyone over the age of 67, to help towards heating costs.

In a statement Dr Murrison said:

“Sir Keir Starmer has made a political choice in diverting funds from hard-pressed pensioners this winter to pay members of the trade unions that backed him during the general election.

"In this area of Wiltshire, we have a high proportion of poorly insulated homes occupied by people on the basic State Pension, who stand to really suffer because of this government's choices.”
