A Wiltshire domestic abuse charity says it saw a significant rise in calls to it's helpline during Euro 2024.

England reached the final of the tournament before losing 2-1 to Spain.

FearFree say they're expecting the trend of more calls and more referrals to continue in the wake of the competition.

Charity CEO Claire Marshall spoke to Greatest Hits Radio.

"Our helpline got a 20% upsurge in people asking for help and support and advice for friends and family they were concerned about," she said.

Sadly, major football tournaments regularly see domestic abuse reports rise, with Euro 2024 appearing to have become part of the that trend.

Claire told us alcohol has a lot to do with increased reports of abuse.

She said: "Alcohol plays a significant role escalating the situation, but so do the passions that arise from supporting a team and being invested in that team.

"Passion can quickly turn to anger."

FearFree aim to break the cycle of abuse and encourage both victims and perpetrators to reach out for help.
