Dog owners in Wiltshire are being told to make sure their pets microchip information is fully up to date by an animal charity.

The call comes from the Dogs Trust, which has a rehoming centre in Newton Toney, as data reveals fewer than 2 in 5 stray dogs picked up by council wardens are successfully returned to their owners.

The latest Dogs Trust Stray Dog Survey found 36,000 stray dogs were handed in to local authorities last year, with estimates suggesting less than 40% of those dogs has the correct owner details on the microchip.

It's been a legal requirement for dogs to be microchipped since 2016, however, many owners forget to update the details on their dogs' chip when they move house or change telephone numbers, making it much harder for dogs to be reunited with their owners.

Claire Rowe, Rehoming Centre Manager of Dogs Trust Salisbury, said: "Sadly, as our survey shows, thousands of dogs are found as strays each year. If the worst does happen, and you lose your dog, up to date details on their microchip will give you the best chance of being reunited with your dog.

"When a dog goes missing, it is a stressful time for the dog, their owners, and their families, so we encourage all dog owners to check and update the details on their dog's microchip. It is easy to do either online, by telephone, or post. It's a simple and effective step every dog owner can take to protect their beloved pets."

When authorities are unable to return dogs to their owners, they are regularly handed in to organisations like the Dogs Trust for rehoming.

One of the many stray dogs in Dogs Trust care is Stitch, the two-year-old Ibizan Hound x Lurcher crossbreed.

Described as "friendly" and "not overly needed", although a likes a fuss and attention once a bond has been established, Stitch is seeking his forever home.

The Dogs Trust says he's been housetrained at his previous home and is learning how fun bouncy or squeaky toys can be. While hie is vocal, especially when he sees other dogs or feels he's missing out, he settles quickly with encouragement.
