Fixed penalty notices (FPN) have been issued by Wiltshire Council for fly-tipping offences in South Wiltshire.

The council are clamping down on illegal dumping of waste through its We’re Targeting Fly-tippers (WTF) campaign and investing in extra technology as well as more officers in order to catch offenders.

An FPN has been handed out to a person from Durrington, who was spotted by a member of the public throwing carpet underlay onto a grass verge on a byway off Milston Road in February.

The quick-thinking witness took photos of the vehicle and the unknown person, allowing Enforcement Officers to track the offender down.

A man from the Collingbourne Ducis area was also issued with an FPN after his waste was found on military land off a byway near Everleigh.

As FPNs are not a conviction in open court, the offenders cannot be named.

Cllr Caroline Thomas, Cabinet Member for Highways and Waste, said these examples highlight the work being done as part of the campaign.

“These FPNs should be a reminder to Wiltshire residents to be extra vigilant when paying someone to take their waste away.

“Some people who advertise waste collections on social media are unlicensed to remove waste, and people should always check for a waste carriers licence and take down the vehicle details of anyone who takes away their waste – or they could be fined if the waste is dumped.”
