Wiltshire Council gets more funding for cycle lanes

The latest schemes could include a bike path for Salisbury's Downton Road.

£681,000 has been given to Wiltshire Council from the second round of the Department for Transport's Active Travel Fund, to be put towards cycling schemes.

But it is less than the £908,000 the authority asked for, which means it is gauging our views on which projects should be taken forward.

Among the ideas that are being considered this time is a 'permanent shared use cycle path' on Downton Road in Salisbury.

The authority says the path will be created by widening the space into the verge, connecting an existing shared path on New Bridge Road to the Britford park and ride site.

A public consultation on this plan, and four others in Chippenham, Melksham and Corsham is set to begin this week.

That survey is also asking for our thoughts on the cycle lanes that were set up using the first round of Government funding.

Those schemes include the controversial cycle lanes along Brown Street and Exeter Street in Salisbury.

Cllr Bridget Wayman, Cabinet Member for Highways, said:

"Original Department for Transport advice was to install these temporary cycle lanes quickly and without consultation as part of the Emergency Active Travel fund.

"However, we want to find out people's views on the next round of schemes, and also on the temporary cycle lanes that are already installed, so we are holding this online consultation, which will start next week.

"We will progress schemes based on the outcome of this consultation and further comments from the DfT, and we will also make a decision on the ones currently in place based on the feedback we receive."

We'll share details of the consultation as soon as they're available from Wiltshire Council.
