31% increase in formal actions against flytipping in Wiltshire last year
The Council's efforts have seen them nominated for a national award
A huge increase in the number of formal actions taken against flytipping across Wiltshire has earned the Council a nomination for a national award.
The authority's Environmental Enforcement Team's been shortlisted for a Keep Britain Tidy award.
It follows a 31% rise in actions taken to tackle the illegal dumping of rubbish locally, and a campaign asking to take more responsibility for our waste.
Wiltshire Council's up against Cambridge City Council and Wigan Council for the prize, with winners announced in Liverpool later this month (30th January).
The authority launched its Stop at Source (SAS) campaign in July, aiming to make people aware of their ‘duty of care’ when they’re getting rid of their waste, particularly if they’re handing it to someone who will take it away for them, such as people who advertise ‘tip runs’ on social media.
Cllr Nick Holder, Cabinet Member for Highways and Street Scene, said:
“We are really proud to have been shortlisted again for the Keep Britain Tidy awards, showing once again what a great job our Environmental Enforcement teams are doing to tackle fly-tipping in the county. I’d like to congratulate and thank our officers for all their hard work, often going above and beyond to ensure success.
“The We’re Targeting Fly-tippers (WTF) and the Stop at Source (SAS) campaigns are hard-hitting and eye-catching and have been featured in both the local and national media. Most importantly though, they are getting results, with fly-tipping being completely eradicated at some of our previously known hotspots, thanks to the introduction of highly visible towers, equipped with live cameras and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), as well as it’s covert camera capability. That’s a fantastic result!
“We’ve seen a 31% increase in formal actions year on year. We are taking all the legal options available to us wherever we find fly-tipping, giving a clear warning that illegal waste disposal is not tolerated and offenders will face serious consequences.
“Our message is clear – We’re Targeting Fly-tippers here in Wiltshire.”
