A number of charities in Wiltshire are celebrating the "vital" work done by their volunteers.

They're using National Volunteers Week to celebrate their selfless staff members and urging others to get involved.

That includes children's hospice charity Julia's House, who are looking for people to work in their Salisbury shop as well as getting involved in their fundraising.

Volunteers are needed for the Julia's House shop in Salisbury

Liz Thompson, Volunteer Co-ordinator for Julia's House, said:

"You don't have to have experience to be a volunteer at Julia's House, as we provide all the training you will require. You just need to be friendly, reliable and have the confidence to talk to our customers and make them feel welcome.

"It's a great feeling to be supporting your local community and will make all the difference to the children and families we care for locally. Volunteering has lots of benefits from building confidence to reducing stress and is a great way to make friends and have fun. We would love to hear from anyone who has a few hours to spare."

Meanwhile, Wiltshire Air Ambulance are also getting involved this week.

During the pandemic, they lost around ÂŁ500,000 as they were unable to hold fundraising events.

However, they have a number of plans in place for the upcoming summer and could do with some help going forward.

They're looking for people all over the county, but particularly in Salisbury.

WAA volunteer Ian Best

Long standing volunteer Ian Best said:

"Retirement in 2013 left a big hole so volunteering was an obvious way to do something useful and keep active.

"I do whatever needs doing really, including attending events, bucket collections, cheque presentations and collection tin distributions. I've even done some gardening at the airbase.

"One of the things I am continually amazed and humbled by is incredible support of the people of Wiltshire and Bath; their generosity and support makes the role of the volunteer a real pleasure."
