The number of Covid-19 cases in Wiltshire has remained high, however it has come down a little from the previous week.

Latest Government figures show that in the seven days to August 4th, there were 1,269 cases recorded in the county.

That's down 35 from the week before, giving Wiltshire a case rate per 100,000 population of 251.8.

That's compared to the national average of 286.9.

Wiltshire's Public Health Director Kate Blackburn says the data suggests we are heading in the right direction:

"Our case rate went up incredibly quickly, just as we saw nationally, and we think there was probably an additional bulge to that that was a direct result of the euros, we saw cases rise in certain parts of the population where we knew the euros had an impact.

"We then saw eight days of dropping case rates but for the last week or so that rate has pretty much plateaued around the 250 mark, which is a still very high case rate but what we're not seeing is that translating into the similar number of hospital admissions as we were in the previous peaks of the pandemic but we are seeing people still admitted to hospital that have been vaccinated, who are in younger age groups who are absolutely needing hospital care to treat this virus so I think we still need to be really really aware of how nasty and deadly this virus is."

Meanwhile, Kate has been pleased with the amount of people still protecting themselves in shops and supermarkets etc.

She says the amount of shoppers still wearing face masks and social distancing will help bring the case rate down.

Kate told Greatest Hits Radio:

"Across Wiltshire I think we have continued to see individuals still wearing face coverings in indoor spaces and that's really great because it's not about protecting yourself, it's absolutely about protecting other people in that space who may be more vulnerable to this virus and really it's not interfering with what you are doing if you're in an indoor space to wear a face covering it's not really a hardship if it means you're protecting somebody else from getting a really nasty virus."
