Crews from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service have been back on the scene assisting the Ministry of Defence after wildfires reignited on Salisbury Plain.

They managed to put out a patch of gorse which reignited although a large fire burning in the impact zone is too dangerous for fire-fighters to enter because of the risk of unexploded ordnance.

Smoke has been drifting across the area prompting complaints from residents.

Andrew posted on social media:

"Absolutely stinks in the Windsor drive area, Devizes. A proper bitter, acrid taste to it. This cannot be good for any of us, particularly my 6 month old child."

Whilst Claire Walker said she'd woken up to a 'pungent smell' in Haxton.

Wiltshire Council said:

"Although it could be challenging due to the warmer weather, people in the affected areas are being advised to do their best to avoid smoke and fumes where they can by closing windows, but where possible to make the most of any opportunities to increase ventilation when wind and other conditions allow."

Helicopter operations to resume

A spokesperson for DWFRS said a

"Firefighters have returned to Salisbury Plain this morning to assess the incident with partners from the MOD. Helicopter operations will resume today to dampen down hot spots on the plain. This will be supported by a water carrier and specialist appliance."

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation, part of the MOD, are managing the fire with support from the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Servic

The fires broke out last Monday (11th July) with the MOD confirming they were as a result of live firing.
