Van believed to be stolen crashes and catches fire in Salisbury

A white transit van collided with a wall on the A36 Churchill Way East in Salisbury this morning and caught alight.

Police were called at around 4:45am to a single-vehicle road traffic collision.

The road was closed for a short time as police officers and firefighters dealt with the incident.

Further enquiries then established that the force believe the van had been stolen.

The driver of the vehicle left the scene of the crash shortly after it happened.

The incident happened near College Roundabout

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said:

“At around 4.45am this morning (06/12) we were called to a single-vehicle road traffic collision on Churchill Way East, Salisbury.

“The vehicle, a white transit van, had collided with a wall and then caught fire.

“Police officers and the fire service attended and the road was closed for a short time while the fire was dealt with.

“Further enquiries established that we believe the van was stolen and the driver of the vehicle left the scene shortly after the collision.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and we would ask any witnesses to call Wiltshire Police on 101, quoting log 23 of today (06/12).”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said:

"We were called to the College roundabout on Churchill Way, Salisbury at 4.50am this morning for a van on fire. One crew from Salisbury attended and two breathing apparatus wearers used one hose reel jet to extinguish. The stop was at 5.15am."
