Two South Wiltshire friends driving to Poland with donations for Ukrainian refugees
Community answers plea to help
Two men from South Wiltshire are doing their bit to help Ukrainian refugees fleeing the conflict.
David Williamson-Jones from Stratford Tony and George Syrett from Downton put out a call for help with donations earlier this week.
The pair planned to fill a van to take to Przemysl in Poland close to the Ukrainian border, their plea was more than answered by the local community.
The Goat in Downton, which was the main drop off point, has been inundated with donations including nappies, wipes, sleeping bags and thermos flasks.
George told Greatest Hits Radio
"The response has been just quite unbelievable. We set about this on Monday morning and within a few days we've got three sites which are full of aid. It's actually quite emotional."
The pair managed to organise a second van with both leaving the village this afternoon.
Their JustGiving page has also seen donations of more than £10,000
That money will be used to help deprived families.
David said "one idea is to put some of them up in hotels" to help them get back on their feet .
He also hopes on the return journey they'll be able to give some refugees a lift.
Since the Russia invasion more than 1 million refugees have fled Ukraine with more than half going to Poland.
The United Nations has warned the exodus could become “the biggest refugee crisis this century”.
