Construction of Trowbridge's new leisure centre has moved a step closer as a partner for contraction has been confirmed.

Pellikaan Construction will lead the new build having also been involved in building the Melksham Community Campus, which opened in 2022.

It means work on the new leisure centre can begin this Spring, after planning application for the new facility was approved in December 2024, subject to conditions, by Wiltshire Council’s Strategic Planning Committee.

The new centre will be built on the council-owned East Wing site, located across the road from County Hall and will include:

• A six-lane, 25m swimming pool

• 7m x 13m learner pool

• Gym with 120 exercise stations

• Two studios

• Immersive spin studio

• Community meeting room

• Café

• Adventure play – providing activities for young people in the form of TAGactive (main target age group 12-16yrs)

• Live well suite - providing a dedicated space for older people to exercise

To aid connections in a busy area, the council is planning to refurbish the Longfield Gyratory and traffic signals at the Tesco access, which will include road resurfacing and improved street lighting.

Cllr Ian Blair-Pilling, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Public Health said: “Yet another milestone has been reached on this project, which has significant momentum – demonstrating our desire and passion to deliver this brand-new leisure centre for Trowbridge and the wider area. We’re delighted to be working with Pellikaan Construction on another significant project. They showed how professional and community-focussed they are with their work on the hugely popular Melksham Community Campus.

“The location of our new leisure centre in Trowbridge will provide quality health, fitness and wellbeing facilities for our communities and unlock wider work in the area to complement our overall vision for Trowbridge and enhance connectivity. Work will be getting underway very soon. The whole project team can’t wait to see the vision take shape.”

Opening date confirmed for refurbished Warminster Centre

In addition to the Trowbridge works moving a step forward, the new facilities at Warminster Sports Centre will reopen later this month.

The Council has confirmed the Sports Centre will open it's doors on Thursday 20th March.

The refurb, which has seen the gym relocated to the ground floor from the first floor, has made the fitness centre more accessible to all people.

The fitness suite upgrade has seen the gym space has nearly doubled in size.

It also features:

• All new cardiovascular equipment, including a curved treadmill, air bike and Stairmaster

• An increased number of resistance machines

• A larger free weight area, including an Olympic lifting rack, 4-in-1 rack, Smith machine, dumbbells and barbells

• A functional area with Rig, kettlebells, medicine balls, slam balls, battle ropes and TRX suspension training

• A consultation room for inductions and member reviews.

The completion will see phase two of the project get under with the old fitness space on the first floor being converted a flexible space for instructor led and virtual classes, plus other events such as meetings and children’s parties.

After that, the changing rooms will be moved next to the sports hall.

Cllr Ian Blair-Pilling, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said, “We’re really excited to be able to open the new gym facilities at Warminster Sports Centre. We hope that users will agree that they are much more modern and fit-for-purpose.

“We want to support people to keep mentally and physically active and that is why we’re investing in our leisure centres. These improvements will help to make the gym at Warminster more accessible, giving people of all ages more opportunity to utilise them.

“Works will now take place to complete upgrades to the exercise studio and following that the changing rooms. We thank our loyal customers for their ongoing patience while these works have been carried out.”
