Tree roots in Salisbury Market Place being 'resurfaced'
If you've noticed work on the trees, don't worry, they're safe!
Resurfacing work's been carried out by Salisbury City Council - and while you'd expect that to be on the roads, this time it's for some tree roots!
The pits around the base of the trees in the Market Place are being worked on at the moment.
We're told the existing resin surface is degrading, so a new 'rhino mulch' surface is being laid on top.
That's thought to be more hard wearing and environmentally friendly.
WHAT'S THE PROCESS?
Staff will start at each tree pit by removing any sharp or unnecessary parts of the stone surface, making sure they don't damage any tree roots.
A weed suppressing membrane will then be laid with the rhino mulch on top.
That material's made from recycled rubber that would otherwise go to landfill - it'll allow water to pass through too, to keep the trees hydrated.
An 'autumn blend' colour has also been chosen for the mulch, to make it look more natural.
Councillor Annie Riddle, who is a part of the Council Leadership Group, said:
“The new tree pit coverings will be a fantastic improvement for the trees and overall appearance of the Market Place. By using this new surface material, we can make sure that the beautiful trees will be well protected and live a healthy life in the centre of our city.”
