Three of Wiltshire's have told us they will be opposing the assisted dying bill in Parliament today.

MP's are voting on the third reading of the Terminally Ill Adults bill, proposed by Kim Leadbeater MP, with further amendments to be voted on.

Salisbury's John Glen has called it "one of the most significant issues" during his decade and a half as a member of Parliament.

Mr Glen told Greatest Hits Radio: "I have always recognised that this is an extremely sensitive issue for people on either side of the debate and I have listened to many constituents’ views and experiences and given them all careful consideration."

He voted against the bill at it's second reading, as he wasn't reassured of the necessary safeguards being in place to protect the most vulnerable in communities from coercion, making a decision based on their financial situation or their access to palliative care.

Mr Glen added: "I tabled amendments which sought to strengthen the oversight of the panels after the requirement for a high court judge to oversee each case was dropped, but these amendments were not accepted and many others tabled by members on both sides of the debate were rejected at committee stage."

He tells us that he will be voting against the bill today, saying: "I know that many colleagues across the house who supported the bill initially have also concluded that the committee stage did not provide the safeguards they expected to see and will now also vote against the bill. I remain hopeful that other members might be persuaded in the chamber today."

East Wiltshire MP Danny Kruger will also be opposing the bill, as will Melksham and Devizes' Brian Mathew.

Chippenham's Sarah Gibson says she'll be voting for the bill.

Mrs Gibson said: "In my opinion the heart of this debate is compassion, dignity, and the right of individuals facing terminal illness to have greater control over their final days. I will be voting in favour of the assisted dying bill because I believe that, with the right safeguards in place, we can offer people choice, without undermining the value we place on every life."
