A facility in Salisbury helping people with disabilities live their best lives has opened it's doors to showcase the work it does.

Bradbury House in Old Sarum provides respite care for people living in full time care.

We've visited them during their open day to find out more about what they do.

The centre has a number of spaces for activities, including a movie space, pool table, kitchens, arts and crafts areas and garden spaces, for individuals to learning new skills and make friends.

Cllr Jane Davies is Cabinet member for Adult Social Care at Wiltshire Council and told Greatest Hits Radio the facility is "a home away from home" for those using it.

She told us that the support provided there is 'crucial'.

"Everyone deserves to live their best life possible," she said, adding that she loves visiting the centres, with Bradbury House one of three across the county.

Visitors to Bradbury House can learn new skills

Bradbury House Manager, Mercedes Cass, told us the open day was an opportunity to raise awareness around what they do and the support they offer to families in our communities.

She said the job is very rewarding.

"The main reason for the respite centre is to provide breaks to families. While individuals are here, they're supported to gain more independent life skills so that if anything were to change in their home environment, we're setting them up to move on."

Many of those who visit the centre see it as a holiday, with bedrooms for them to stay over as well as going on trips into the community and visits to places like Longleat Safari Park.

Individuals can get creative with arts and crafts

We spoke to Jasmine, one of the people visiting the centre.

She told us why she enjoys visiting Bradbury House: "I love coming here because it's a nice place to relax and chill out. You can do a lot of things, arts and crafts or go out."

Jasmine said her favourite thing to do is to watch moves, with The Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings among her favourites.

She described the staff as "amazing", adding that she likes them all.

The council is calling for more of us to consider a career in supporting people like Jasmine live their best lives.

Cllr Davies said people underestimate the joy that can come from a role working with people who have disabilities.

She said: "I think what people don't always understand is what fun it is. We do a lot of the sort of activities that you maybe haven't don't since you were at school.

"You get to come and play and be with other people and it's really engaging. People with disabilities are enormous fun and it's a great place to be."
