It's the first time in 34 years that that event's had to be cancelled, with the committee saying they've taken the decision 'with heavy hearts'.

The 'Stonehenge Stomp' would normally see hundreds of people walking or running one of five routes, ranging from 5K to 40K, starting from Amesbury Sports Centre on the last Sunday of January.

The ongoing pandemic means that for safety reasons, it won't be going ahead in 2021.

City of Salisbury Athletics and Running Club (CoSARC) has said:

"When we met in the autumn the landscape was too hazy for us to commit to hold the Stomp. So, with heavy hearts, we decided not to go ahead in 2021. This is the first time in 34 years that there has been no Stomp in January, which is incredibly sad.

"We know how much the event means to everyone but this was the only decision possible. We very much hope to be back Stomping again on 30th January 2022."

The Stonehenge Stomp would ordinarily begin from the Amesbury Sports Centre

SUPPORTING LOCAL CHARITIES

There is a positive to come out of the Stonehenge Stomp though, as CoSARC has announced where the proceeds from the 2020 Stonehenge Stomp will be going.

They're being split between four local charities - the National Trust, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and Salisbury's Children's Chance get £750 each, while £200 is being given to the Amesbury History Centre.

Jane Miller, Chair and Trustee of Children's Chance say that money will help them with their work to support children with their home learning through the pandemic:

"We are donating laptops to schools for loan to the children, ensuring that all safeguarding is in place. One particular school was overjoyed to have our support because without it the children would simply not be able to undertake basic learning activities. Thank you for your amazing support."
