Stonehenge Alliance lead campaigner Dr Kate Fielden has died, aged 79.

Dr Fielden’s death was announced by the Alliance on Sunday afternoon (23rd July), passing away after a short illness.

In a twitter post, the Alliance described Dr Fielden as their “leading light”:

“Kate spearheaded our campaigns to safeguard Stonehenge WHS from harm for over 30 years. Our deepest sympathy to her family,” they said.

Historian and Stonehenge Alliance president Tom Holland tweeted that Dr Fielden was “one of the most quietly remarkable and admirable women” he had ever met.

Leading light in campaign against Stonehenge tunnel

Only last week, Dr Fielden had been leading the campaign against the approval of the Stonehenge Tunnel.

The Government approved plans for the tunnel to be constructed earlier this month.

Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, Dr Fielden had told us other solutions needed to be found.

“It's a great disappointment, given that the scheme was recommended for refusal from the Government's own team of examiners, it's received the thumbs down from UNESCO and it's a poor example to the world really, that the UK Government would treat a World Heritage Site in this way."

Tom Holland also tweeted that at the best of times it was a grotesque decision.

The Alliance is running a petition to stop damage being done to the Stonehenge site, and fundraising towards legal fees for a potential judicial review into the decision to approve the project.
