Striker Nathan Tella has left Southampton to join German sider Bayer Leverkusen.

The 24-year-old leaves St Mary's six years after arriving at the club's academy from Arsenal.

Tella, who scored 17 league goals on loan as Burnley won promotion back to the Premier League last season, has signed a five-year contract after joining for a reported £20m fee.

"Many younger players from the Premier League got a chance in the Bundesliga and were able to improve significantly here," Tella told Leverkusen's website.

"This is an impressive team who made it to the semi-finals of the Europa League last season. I really want to continue on this path with Bayer 04."

In a statement Southampton Football Club said: "Although disappointed to lose such a talented homegrown player and popular character, the club felt the offer represented fair value for the 24-year-old.

"The move also gives him the opportunity to fulfil his desire to play abroad, and play in the Europa League this season."
