The biggest theatre on the south coast has submitted plans for the final phase of its major refurbishment project.

Mayflower Theatre in Southampton is looking to carry out an extension to create a new rehearsal studio.

The charitable trust that runs the grade II-listed venue is aiming to start building next year, with project completion targeted for August 2026.

Chief executive and creative director Michael Ockwell said: “Mayflower Theatre’s ambition is to attract the best shows and performances which is matched by our drive towards delivering inspiring experiences for all.

“We recognise that our on-site provision for youth theatre falls short of our vision for creative spaces to develop and inspire young people.

“In addition, touring companies require dedicated rehearsal space as Southampton remains the first stop for West End touring productions.

“This development is not only a fantastic new space but it will improve our facilities and further strengthen Mayflower’s reputation as a leading theatre.”

The theatre in Commercial Road completed a £7.5million investment to refurbish the main auditorium and deliver a new green room, archive and back of house to front of house connection corridor six years ago.

Alongside a dedicated double-height studio space, the third phase of the project would provide two more accessible dressing rooms, a new back-of-house stage door and a new admin block entrance.

The proposed extension to the south of the existing admin block off Empire Lane would be a “high performing/sustainable building” as part of the theatre’s effort to achieve net zero by 2030.

A design and access statement by architect Foster Wilson Size said providing dedicated and suitable spaces for young people to thrive was a core ambition of the project.

Mayflower’s programme of youth theatre projects, which are fully funded by the trust, is in its 10th year and has welcomed more than 210,000 people to experience the creative arts.

The theatre is seeking approval for a full planning application and listed building consent from Southampton City Council.

A heritage statement prepared by Radley House Partnership said: “The design of the new studio building will enhance the Mayflower complex as a whole and not detract from the existing listed building.

“The provision of new rehearsal space, a new entrance with appropriate levels of security and fully accessible facilities will help to ensure the future viability of the theatre.

“Essential improvements to connectivity will facilitate smooth running of the theatre.”
