Six schools in South Wiltshire have been awarded a national Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark, which recognises high standards of education for students with dyslexia.

The six schools are: The Trafalgar School, Zouch Academy, St Mark’s C. of E. Junior School, St Peter’s C. of E. Primary School, Sarum Academy and Wilton C. of E. Primary School.

Each school has demonstrated they can provide effective support for dyslexic pupils over the course of a two-year programme, in which they were supported by the Wiltshire Specialist SEN Service (SSENS).

Receiving the Quality Mark provides a framework for schools to grow their understanding of dyslexia and literacy difficulties, allowing them to develop support strategies to help dyslexic learners engage and thrive.

Cllr Jane Davies, Cabinet Member for SEND, said achieving the award is positive statement that lets everyone know school is a good place for people with dyslexia.

“Becoming a dyslexia-friendly school requires the involvement and commitment of all of those within the school, and a review of the school’s approaches to: teaching and learning; monitoring and assessment; differentiation; and high-quality practice across the range of ability and need.”

With this project being such a success, Wiltshire Council as launched a second project to train and support a further 15 schools.
