Salisbury and South Wiltshire will fall silent to honour the fallen today (Sunday 13th November), with events to mark Remembrance Sunday.

In the city centre, the traditional service will take place at the Cenotaph in the Guildhall Square from 11.00am.

The ceremony will be led by the Salisbury Branch of the Royal British Legion and supported by Salisbury City Council.

Afterwards, a parade will march along New Canal, and to St Thomas' Church for a service at 11.40am.

Blue Boar Row and other roads along the parade route will be shut to traffic between 10.15am and 11.45am and again at 12.15pm until 1.30pm.

In Amesbury, a parade will march along the High Street to St Mary and St Melor Church - that'll begin from 10.30am.

The Mayor of Amesbury and a senior officer will take the salute ahead of a Remembrance Service at the War Memorial.

Members of 1011 Squadron Air Training Corps will be present to allow members of the congregation to contribute to the Poppy Appeal.

New War Memorial being unveiled

A special event's also taken place at Castle Hill Country Park, between Old Sarum and Bishopdown, at 3.00pm.

A woodland memorial is being unveiled at the site - a 100 year old chestnut monolith, sourced from the Stourhead estate, near Mere.

It'll go alongside some trees that were planted in 2018, to mark the centenary of the end of World War One.

Parish Councillor, Lesley Waller said:

“Daily, we are reminded of the horrors of war by the situation in Ukraine so it is timely, to think about all the people who sacrificed their lives during WW1 whether at the frontline or on the home front. Planting the first Oak tree in this wood, back in 2018, was an honour for me, one I treasure. We will remember them, and we do.”
