South West Wiltshire MP backs calls to improve access for guide dogs
81% of people with an assistance dog have been turned away from shops
South West Wiltshire MP, Andrew Murrison, says it's 'completely unacceptable' that people with guide dogs are being denied access.
A survey by the Guide Dogs charity has found 81% of those with an assistance animal have been turned away from shops and restaurants because of their dogs.
Dr Murrison has been showing support for the rights of guide dog owners at an event in Parliament.
Andrew learnt more about the charity’s campaign to strengthen the law and requirements for training to prevent access refusals from happening in the first place. He said:
“I am appalled that people with assistance dogs should be denied access. In my view that’s completely unacceptable and must change.”
Eleanor Briggs, Head of Policy, Public Affairs and Campaigns at Guide Dogs, said:
“Guide dog owners deserve to be able to live the lives they want and feel confident, independent, and supported in the world. However, too many guide dog owners continue to face discrimination and are turned away because they have their guide dog with them. That’s why we are calling for action to strengthen the law to end this unacceptable discrimination.”
