Wiltshire and Swindon Sport launch “She Can Be Active” scheme
Women in the county can now get more active
Following 2.4 million fewer women than men saying they enjoy physical activity, Wilshire and Swindon Sport (WASP) have launched a new campaign to get women active.
The “She Can Be Active” scheme is a local arm of the “This Girl Can” movement across the UK.
Launched on Wednesday (8th March), which was International Women’s Day, the scheme hopes to improve local numbers of women meeting the 150 minutes of recommended exercise per week.
Dominque Oughton of WASP told Greatest Hits Radio:
“(She can be active) is really to support women in Wiltshire and Swindon to overcome the barriers to physical activity and become more active together in a fun and inclusive way.”
The barriers women find preventing them from engaging in more exercise include cost, time constraints, suitability and feeling safe.
Ms Oughton said that the social factor of getting active is important to the scheme:
“So you come along, do your activity, but then you’ve got the chance to network and socialise, have a tea or coffee and a bit of a cake, and say that you’ve had that reward.”
And while there has been high profile success for Women in sport, such as the Lionesses winning Euro 2022, it is more about “moving more and getting those health benefits."
