To be or not to be: Salisbury's the 19th most Shakespearean city
Royal Mail are revealing the news on the famous playwright's Birthday
On William Shakespeare's birthday, Royal Mail's revealed that there are over 2000 addresses in the UK linked to the Playwright and his works.
Aside from the man himself there are over 300 addresses that directly bear his name and one of them is in Salisbury.
In the UK there are more than 300 'Montague' Streets, Ways and Avenues span our fair isle, from Basildon to Bideford.
His name and plays have inspired Shakespeare Road, Stratford Road and Montague Road all featuring in Salisbury's centre.
The iconic tragedy 'Hamlet' has also significantly influenced the naming of our addresses, with over 260 streets and houses honouring the play - including 'Hamlet Gardens' in Andover.
Some of The Bard of Avon's less widely known plays - including 'Titus Andronicus' and 'Troilus & Cressida' - have also inspired the naming of some of the nation's addresses.
Salisbury ranks 19th in the UK's most popular Bard-related street and house names, others include:
- London (200)
- Bristol (34)
- Birmingham (28)
- Colchester, Essex (26)
- Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire (25)
- Southampton (24)
Steve Rooney, Head of Royal Mail's Address Management Unit, said: "Delivering mail to over 31 million addresses, six days a week, gives us an unparalleled view of the nation's street and house names, and sometimes the results are fascinating.
"It's no secret that William Shakespeare and his works form an enormous part of British history and identity, but it's fascinating to see that his legacy is felt so profoundly across the entire country."
