Salisbury District Hospital is offering the local community a look behind the scenes today (Saturday 8th June) at some of the work it does on a daily basis.

It's hosting its second open day event, following on from the success of last years event which drew over 700 visitors.

The site will be open to the public from 10.00am until 3.00pm.

Chief Executive Lisa Thomas said:

“Everyone at the Trust is excited to welcome visitors of all ages once again to visit and witness many of the fascinating things that go on in our hospital and find out more about what we do to provide quality care to our patients.

"We are delighted to be able to provide fun and entertainment for the whole family at what will be a most enjoyable community event, if last year is anything to go by!”

There's a chance to give our toys a 'check-up' at the open day, to show children how doctors and nurses do their jobs

Greatest Hits Radio spoke to Dave Roberts, associate Director of Communications at the Hospital, who said visitors will get to see some of the hospital's newest facilities.

"Depending on operational pressures and the number of women giving birth, there's bits of our maternity, our new maternity unit will be open for people to see, which was fascinating last year," he said.

We'll be able to meet staff from various sections of the NHS as well as go into the simulation suites to see the dummies used to help train staff.

And one of 2023's most popular features, the toy hospital, will return.

Children can take their toys for a health check by a member of the paediatrics team.

A range of NHS opportunities

Dave told us that 2023's open day was more about allowing people to come on site post covid to allow us to see what they do.

But this year, there's an extra element to the event, with the hospital keen to showcase the range of career opportunities in the NHS.

"You can enter working for the health service at 18, quite happily without going to study for a degree," he said.

He added: "You can come and work in our facilities team, in our Estates team where we have plumbers and electricians and carpenters. We have the chefs and the housekeepers, and we have.

"Then we have the all the management people and we have the admin. I mean there's over 5000 staff at Salisbury Hospital and they're not all doctors and nurses and therapists."

Most of the open day will be held on the green at Entrance B, with 53 exhibitors, including 33 different hospital departments and 20 other activities.

David said: "It looks like it's going to be a cracking day!"
