Improved care's being given to older patients at Salisbury District Hospital, through a new Acute Frailty Unit there.

It's been opened for those who arrive in the Emergency Department over the age of 80, or 75 if they're classed as especially frail.

A consultant-led team will aim to reduce the length of stay for these patients and boost patient flow through the hospital.

The unit's been set up on the Durrington ward, making use of a Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) area.

The former Durrington team has moved to Pitton ward.

Russell Mellor, Frailty Consultant, said:

“Our team has done an amazing job over the last six months working together and utilising the improving together principles to help improve patient care for our frail elderly patients.

“By working closely with the site team and getting the right patients to the right place in a timely manner has meant that we can start treatment plans and decision-making early, and improve the outcomes for our patients, reduce their length of stay and prevent declines in the physical function of their bodies, while improving patient flow in the hospital.”
