Salisbury women asked to have a bra clear-out for others in Africa
The city's Soroptimists are holding their annual bra collection
Salisbury's females are asked to have an underwear clear-out in the coming weeks.
Soroptimists in the city are holding their annual bra collection once again, and will send those in decent condition out to Africa for women to get more use from them.
They're asking for new and lightly used bras to be handed in at Salisbury's Five Rivers Leisure Centre or 60 Endless Street, SP1 3UH before July 1st.
The underwear will then be sorted and given to the Afreebra charity, who send items out to areas of Africa where they can be given a new lease of life.
Most will go the Ghana, where an local 'Queen Mother' will distribute them; with others going to Zambia, where mothers are given a bra as an incentive to bring their children to a book club; or the Democratic Republic of Congo, where they're given out by church groups.
It's believed the underwear can boost dignity, value and confidence for the people they're given to.
Penny Joyce from the Soroptimists says the collection fits in with their ethos:
"(We're) really quite an active group, our priority is particularly women - to raise the profile of women, but also to support women."
This is the 5th year of the collection, with 2,300 bras donated last time around.
Penny also says they have a lot of fun with it too:
"We have a bras and bubbly afternoon when we go through them and say things like 'no, you've got to be joking, no' (if they're threadbare and not suitable for re-use), and 'thank you, thank you' for all the wonderful bras that are perfect! It is usually more perfect than 'you've got to be joking' bras!"
