Salisbury school allowing girls in sixth form for first time
It's being described as a "really exciting time" for both students and the school.
Bishop Wordsworth's is welcoming girls into year 12 for the first time ever, this September.
For the past 20 years or so, they have had guest female students from South Wilts Grammar School, but now around 40 of them are officially part of the sixth form.
BWS Sixth Form has now become fully co-educational.
Headteacher, Stuart Smallwood, said he is excited about the future:
"It's absolutely fantastic news that the girls are joining us, we've grown our sixth form significantly and I'm really looking forward to seeing the impact they have on the school so it's really exciting times.
People seem to think the decision makes sense, I think the staff are really looking forward to it and the girls who came in for their first day were obviously really excited and happy to be here and looking forward to cracking on with the new term so I can't wait, it will be really really exciting to have them on board and see what they can do."
From today (Monday 7th September) the full school is returning for the first time since the UK lockdown started.
They had a phased reopening last week, with a maximum of two years groups in per day.
Many safety measures have been introduced across all Salisbury schools, to make them Covid secure.
At Bishop Wordsworth's, one change includes a new start time so those students who walk or get the bus can avoid peak times on public transport.
