Salisbury Reds has given a grant to a city service, providing support to those struggling with the cost of living.

The bus operator's £500 of support, through their Community Fund, has gone to St Michael's Community Care in Bemerton Heath, towards their café and community fridge.

The service takes in donated food from local shops and passes it on to those in need.

Kevin Martin from St Michael's says it will make a big difference:

“These items are used to help those who cannot afford to buy food because they have run out of money before their next pay day for wages or benefits.

“As part of our expansion, we have been seeking to secure funding to provide low cost cooked meals to families and individuals who are struggling to buy food. We’ll be offering all this within the cafe, but spare meals will also be available from our community fridge - for people who wish to eat at home.

“We have also been looking to improve the appliances we have in the kitchen, and introduce new ones. Salisbury Reds has helped enormously by providing a grant payment from its Community Fund. This funding boost will make a real difference, allowing us to start this important project in time for the summer holidays, when families can be struggling most to provide meals to children.”

David Newton, Salisbury Reds operations manager, said:

“St Michael's Community Care is a hugely important resource for local people. Without it, many would experience extreme hardship during these challenging times.

“It’s so important to have a community group like this - and we were delighted to be able to help with this latest project.”

Salisbury Reds runs a Community Fund to support local projects throughout the year.

The next funding allocation will be in October.
