Could you swap the car for the bus in Salisbury in September?
Salisbury Reds say a full double decker would take 75 cars off the roads
People in South Wiltshire are being encouraged to 'catch the bus' during September, as part of a national campaign.
Salisbury Reds is taking part in an awareness month, calling on commuters and visitors to help take vehicles off our roads.
Our local bus company says a fully loaded double decker bus could eliminate up to 75 cars, while a new diesel car with a single occupant would emit more nitrogen oxides than a bus carrying 50 or more passengers.
Salisbury Reds managing director, Andrew Wickham said:
“Catch the Bus month offers us an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the many benefits of leaving the car at home and travelling with Salisbury Reds.
“Almost two thirds of the nation’s public transport journeys are by bus - and they are the primary mode of access to our city centres, contributing £21 billion to the economy each year.
“Helping to improve air quality across Salisbury is one of our primary aims. Alongside our many low emissions buses, we have worked with Wiltshire Council in recent years to bring three electric buses park & ride buses to the city."
Weekly paper tickets scrapped
This also comes as Salisbury Reds have stopped issuing paper tickets for passengers who want a seven day travel pass.
The change came into effect yesterday (Sunday 3rd September).
To prevent waste paper, and cut the risk of tickets being lost, the bus operator will now only offer the seven day ticket through their app, or buy tap on payments on services themselves.
