Salisbury's Queen Street now fully pedestrianised
This follows a consultation by Wiltshire Council
Queen Street in Salisbury is now fully pedestrianised, with bollards put up at each end to prevent vehicles from using it.
The road's been completely shut to traffic by Wiltshire Council, following a public consultation.
They've said the closure is needed to make the area safer, and as it's part of the National Cycle Network.
Cllr Dr Mark McClelland, Cabinet Member for Transport, said:
"We've listened to feedback from residents, businesses and local organisations on the closure, and we recognise that some businesses may feel that it makes deliveries to their premises more difficult. However, having looked at the options, we believe that there are ample opportunities for local businesses to receive deliveries in the vicinity of Queen Street, and that this closure would not make a significant difference to deliveries.
"The closure means that pedestrians and cyclists can safely walk along the road at all times, as an extension of the Guildhall Square, and the introduction of contraflow cycling in both Queen Street and High Street will encourage cycling, as the road forms part of the National Cycle Network."
Any deliveries for Queen Street businesses will now take place in Winchester Street, Blue Boar Row, New Canal, the Market Square or the Cross Keys shopping centre.
The road had previously been closed to traffic between 10.00am and 4.00pm each day.
