Pride month has officially kicked off but how do we celebrate with parades, street parties and community events in Salisbury during a pandemic?

A pop-up Pride shop is opening in the city today at Old George Mall next to the O2.

It is a safe space, where a member of the Pride team can answer any questions or just sit and have a chat.

Wiltshire sexual health will also be there to offer advice.

It is open from 10am to 4pm today and on Sunday.

Merchandise will be on sale the pop-up with lanyards, mugs, badges and flags being sold and 100% of the profits going back to Swindon & Wiltshire Pride and Salisbury Pride which will help towards the costs of the 2021 events.

As part of a Wiltshire tour, the pop-up was in Swindon last weekend and over 500 people visited.

The actual city parade is happening, at Queen Elizabeth Gardens, in September when it is likely that the government will allow large scale events to go ahead.

HISTORY BEHIND GAY PRIDE

A riot prompted a raid that took place during the early morning, at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. The LGBT community held a series of spontaneous demonstrations to protest against the raid and calling for the establishment of places that gays and lesbians could go and be open about their sexual orientation.

LGBT is a movement that celebrates sexual diversity. For lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people it is a way of protesting about discrimination and violence.

Brenda Howard known as the 'Mother of Pride' started the first LGBT Pride march. As well as sparking the idea for a week of events around Pride Day. They have developed into the annual LGBT celebrations held every June.
