An actor starring in a play at Salisbury Playhouse has told us how much he enjoys visiting the city to perform.
Tom Chambers, who won Strictly Come Dancing in 2008, is portraying Danny in Torben Betts’ Murder in the Dark.
The former Holby City and Casualty star said he was ‘very happy’ to see Salisbury was on the list of venues for the tour.
“It's got a wonderful atmosphere. I love the wooden panels because it means the acoustics are good. The audience can really hear everything without you having to feel slightly unnatural by projecting too much.”
Tom added that the backstage area was ‘cosy’ with the layout between the dressing rooms and green room helping to generate ‘a great vibe’.
And he had praise for the Salisbury audience too.
“And the crowds are brilliant. I feel like the public of Salisbury are extremely proud of their theatre because they're just fantastic audience.”
The play itself is a ghost-story set in modern times.
“It's really punchy,” Tom said, adding: “It's very thrilling, very exciting. It's because you don't quite know where it's going.
“There's two really big plot twists near the end, which we're saying, please, if you come and see it, please don't give it away. Keep it a secret. Keep the mystery alive.”
Speaking about the difference between performing on stage and for TV, Tom described theatre as a ‘soul food’ for performers.
“I feel like it's there's a magic to theatre because we're all experiencing the same thing at the same time.
“Theatre makes you feel like you're not alone, because we're sharing the same feelings and emotions.”
Murder in the Dark, which also stars Susie Blake and Laura White, is in Salisbury until Saturday 7th October.
