Salisbury welcoming over 40 bishops from Sudan and South Sudan
They're here today (Monday 8th August)
More than 40 bishops and their spouses from Sudan and South Sudan are being welcomed to Salisbury today.
They're here after attending the fifteenth Lambeth Conference in Canterbury.
The bishops and their spouses will arrive in Salisbury for a welcome lunch hosted by the Rt Revd Stephen Lake, the Bishop of Salisbury, before attending evensong at Salisbury Cathedral.
The visitors will then be hosted in homes across the diocese, where events and services will be held in local communities.
The Diocese of Salisbury and the Sudans have a long connection, and will be celebrating their 50 year partnership in the coming year.
The priorities of the link are to support theological colleges and church schools, provide basic health care by running clinics, and exploring development opportunities.
The group also works on peace initiatives often in partnership with the UK Government, Christian Aid, and across church denominations.
Andrew Rumsey, Bishop of Ramsbury, who is leading the partnership said:
“The Sudan's Link is a vital and enduring partnership, which has deepened mutual understanding and support across cultures. I am thrilled that we have this opportunity to welcome our friends from the Sudans, and pray that we shall learn much from each other about the faith we share.”
