Salisbury is to get a new building society branch soon - taking over a unit at the Poultry Cross.

Yorkshire Building Society has put signs up inside the space that was most recently Bohemia, and before that Game.

The branch is expected to open in April.

A planning application is also currently in with Wiltshire Council for listed building consent there.

That's asking for a change of use there, to become 'a lock-up shop and 4 flats'.

The unit next to the Poultry Cross that's due to become the Yorkshire Building Society

Yorkshire Building Society has 200,000 customers across the UK, with the nearest existing branches in Devizes, Gillingham and Southampton.

Earlier this month, they won the 2023 Moneyfacts Consumer Award for 'High Street Provider of the Year' in the mortgages and savings categories.

It's also a break from the industry standard to have a building society or bank opening outlets, at a time when many are turning away from physical branches in favour of online apps.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Building Society, said:

“We plan to open an agency in Salisbury in April 2023, and look forward to providing a further update once renovations near completion and an exact date can be confirmed.

“We regularly explore retail opportunities in various locations across the country as part of our continued commitment to supporting access to cash on the high street, where there is sufficient demand.

“The agency will be operated by St Barts Finance Ltd, who also operate our agencies in Bournemouth and Southampton. We’re sure the same exceptional customer service will be a welcome addition to Salisbury, and we look forward to supporting savers and borrowers with a building society presence in the city.”
