Salisbury MP and Economic Secretary John Glen says there needs to be greater investment in renewable energy in the UK, which could in turn help with rising bills.

In his latest blog, he says the country is 'still too reliant on fossil fuels' and that's leaving us 'exposed to volatile global gas prices'.

He also thinks there could be a solution:

"This underscores the need to accelerate our renewable energy sector to strengthen our future energy security.

"Onshore wind prices are already down 50% since 2013 and, investment in renewables is the way forward to bring down the cost of energy across the board."

Salisbury's MP wants to see more renewable energy used across the UK

John Glen has been working with the Chancellor on a financial package from Government to help with the cost of living crisis.

The details are due to be announced later today (Thursday 26th May).

He says the Government's securing ÂŁ100 billion of private sector investment into cleaner energy like carbon capture and hydrogen power.

John Glen says there's a pledge to improve the situation for consumers:

"We are also committed to the introduction of long-term policies which enable only the most competitive suppliers – those that offer fair prices and good customer service - to thrive."

Salisbury's MP also says he's had lots of correspondence from constituents asking about how the war in Ukraine will impact gas supplies.

He's explained the figures, to try and reassure people:

"50% of our gas comes from domestic production, 30% from Norway and the remaining percentage from a variety of global markets. Less than 4% of our natural gas was sourced from Russia last year."

There are Government plans to stop sourcing gas from Russia completely, under sanctions imposed in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
