Salisbury MP John Glen highlights 2026 priorities for city
John Glen is focussing on community projects in Bemerton and boosting Salisbury’s city centre economy
Salisbury MP John Glen says he's hoping to see progress on the Pride in Place project in Bemerton, as he outlines what his ambitions for his constituency are.
It's among his leading aims for 2026, after Bemerton secured £20 million of government funding to be invested over the next decade in September 2025.
This initiative aims to rejuvenate the area with a blend of physical developments and community support projects.
“I’ve had several meetings with Councillor Ricky Rogers, Robin Emerson from Rise:61, and community members in Bemerton,” Mr Glen said. “It’s not about what I think; it’s about what the residents feel they need. The government has said we need to listen, evaluate, and come up with a plan that reflects their priorities.
“I hope in the first few months of 2026, we can finalize the structure of a neighbourhood board and draft a coherent plan to guide the work forward.
"By this time next year, I hope we can be excited about projects on their way to completion. Robin is a fantastic champion for Bemerton, and his input will be invaluable.”
Boosting Salisbury’s city centre economy
In addition to the Bemerton project, Mr Glen voiced optimism about Salisbury's ongoing efforts to boost its economy and ensure the vibrancy of the city centre.
He noted that footfall figures in Salisbury remain encouraging compared to other locations, highlighting the successes of Primark and Bradbeers since their arrival in recent years, as well as the strength of independent shops and venues like Salisbury City Hall, the Cathedral, and Salisbury Playhouse.
“Retail and publicans are telling me they’re nervous due to rising business costs, taxation, and new employer legislation," Mr Glen said. "But Salisbury has seen positive developments with Primark and Bradbeers, and the Playhouse remains an essential cultural asset that we hope to invest in further next year to ensure it continues to thrive."
Supporting local businesses and attractions
Mr Glen emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses and investing in cultural and leisure facilities to keep the city vibrant. He acknowledged concerns over the churn retail spaces often experience but stressed the role of venues like City Hall and the refurbished entrance from Fisherton Street in drawing visitors.
“Salisbury is a great place,” Glen remarked. “City Hall has been an excellent addition. They’ve hosted a wide variety of concerts and events, including performances by Salisbury Area Young Musicians that brought in a great crowd.
“I encourage everyone to get behind local businesses here, because they are central to ensuring the city and South Wiltshire continues to thrive.”
